The TCT (Trans-Canada Trail) and the Kettle Valley Railway Bike Trail

From Vancouver to Castelgar

Guidebooks
Bruce Obee: Trans Canada Trail British Columbia. Whitecap Books, 2008. Indispensable. More is not needed. The Lonely Planet is useless.

Equipment
Do not think that this trail can be compared to the standard European rail bike trail, otherwise you will be in for some nasty surprises.
The leg from Vancouver to Hope can be easily cycled with a trekking or touring bike, but only if you take the "main road" from the Cultus Lake to Hope.

For most parts of the Kettle Valley cycle path a mountain bike is essential. I brought a Bulls Copperhead 26 outfitted with some additional equipment: The saddle was exchanged for Maxcycles Feinwerk saddle. In addition, I installed a Cane Creek Thudbuster ST parallelogram suspension, a side stand and a tube DISCO rack. I used Ortlieb Back Roller Plus and an Ortlieb bag for the luggage.

Accomodation:
For several sections you must have food and water for 2 days.

For several sections you must have food and water for 2 days.

Overnight camping on the whole route is without problems, often at well-equipped campsites. The tent-places on Cultus Lake and Summerland are quite expensive (about 30 Canadian dollars). As a cyclist I got a special price (about $ 10) at several campgrounds. In Penticton there is no campground, but there are a lot of (reasonable priced) motels. The overnight-stays in Okanagon wineries are a Chicki-Micki stuff for tourists from New York and China and the price is clearly reflecting this point.

Short tips for the individual stages

New Westminster (Vancouver) - Langley New Westminster (Vancouver) - Langley: The Obee guide-books description of the leg to Langley is insufficient and confusing, because it does not include the Golden Ears Bridge (which did not exist at the time of writing). Use additional maps or print maps from Google Maps. Prebook a motel/hotel, because accomadtion in Langley is heavily booked and expensive.
Langely - Clayburn Especially recommended: Clayburn Village Bed & Breakfast. (website: http://www.clayburnvillagebb.com/) Also recommended is the Lepp Farm Market 2 km west of the bed & breakfast, a kind of organic supermarket.
Clayburn - Cultus Lake Do not take the route via Sumas Hill, given in the Obee guide-book. From Clayburn go further south on the Old Yale Road and circumnavigate the hill. The cycle path parallel to Highway Number 1 (described in Obee) does not exist anymore. You have to take the South Parallel Road (see video) .
Cultus Lake - Hope I took the route to Chiliwack and then used Highway Number 7. (description in the Obee guide-book)
Hope - Brookmere

In my experience there is no longer a cycle trail beyond the Quinette tunnels (because the former cycle path is constantly interrupted by landslides and washed away bridges). The Tourist Office in Hope could not give advice. Between Hope and Tulameen there are no places, where you can buy food or water (only exception: the burger stand just behind the Coquihalla Pass), therefore you need food and water for 2 days.

The ride on the Highway Number 5 up to the Coquihalla Pass is very long, very steep and highly demanding. It is not dangerous, the cycle lane/breakdown lane is wide and the car and truck traffic is not heavy. Nevertheless this trip is quite unnerving: On the breakdown lane all sorts of small parts are scattered and this is really not a place where you would want a nail to give you a nice flat tire.

Take exit 256: This is the best way to Brookmere. The way to Brookmere (about 10 km) on the Coldwater Road is signposted.

Brookmere - Tulameen (Otter Lake) There are no shops in Brookmere. You can not buy food or water there. From Brookmere to Tulameen the Kettle Valley Bike Trail is usable (only very minor interruptions) and well signposted. The landscape is beautiful. but the quality of the trail is sub-standard (to say it very polite) or terrible (to say it how it is).
